Reliability is a top priority at R+W

The situation on the production line was critical: a plastic gear coupling had been originally selected for connection between a gearbox output shaft and an indexing table. Due in part to the relatively large diameter of the turn table it did not take much to overload the coupling, which put the entire operation at risk – when downtime could be least afforded. So the decision was made to secure uptime and availability by means of a high quality safety coupling from R+W.

Our solution: an ES2/150 elastomer safety coupling with torque overload release and simple reset after disengagement.

Quick and easy thanks to the modular principle

R+W elastomer couplings are an assembly of two hubs with curved drive jaws, which plug together with an elastomer insert in the center; preloaded for zero backlash. This axial plug-in design greatly simplifies assembly and installation, as well as subsequent maintenance work on the machine. The elastomer inserts are available in different Shore hardnesses, providing a range of choices for flexibility, stiffness, maximum temperature, and maximum speed, among other characteristics. Use of the correct elastomer ensures optimum compensation for misalignment and vibration, adapting the coupling to the application and not vice versa.

Compared with other types of safety couplings, the ES2 has the additional advantage of an adjustable disengagement torque setting. This allows the coupling to be fine tuned to just the right value.

Flexible and robust

The ES2 uses high grade materials, with case hardened structural steel for the clutch mechanism and wear-resistant, high performance TPU for the elastomer; making the coupling robust, and capable of withstanding operating temperatures of up to 150°C, depending on the choice of insert. The backlash free ball-detent design provides a fast and accurate disengagement when excessive torque is applied, along with a simple and smooth re-engagement after the overload event has passed.

Four different function systems are available, including automatic ratcheting re-engagement attempts every 360° or 60°, full disengagement with manual reset, which is particularly well suited to high speed applications, and a special „load holding“ version, which only disengages for a few degrees of free rotation before internal jaws catch to prevent the load from back-driving.

In this particular application, an ES2/150 with single-position automatic re-engagement was used, and ensured that our customer could continue to produce on schedule without fear of coupling failure.
